Full Description
ChatGPT is a form of generative artificial intelligence (AI) -- a tool that lets users enter prompts to receive human-like images, text or videos that are created by AI. ChatGPT is like the automated chat services found on customer service websites, as people can ask chatbot all kinds of questions. ChatGPT can provide teachers with the following main functions (Staake, 2023):
1. Use it as a smarter search engine.
2. Generate reading passages or scripts for role-plays
3. Get review questions to check for understanding.
4. Teach vocabulary.
5. Provide lesson plan examples.
6. Create problems for different subjects.
7. Find ways to help struggling students.
8. Prepare for tough conversations.
9. Make lists.
10. Ask for writing feedback from bots, including grammar, spelling, references, etc.
11. Check your answers.

Classroom Implementation & Educational Rationale
I can use ChatGPT to generate questions and answers for a pre-assessment game. For example, I can prompt ChatGPT with “What pre-knowledge must students possess before starting the lesson on distinguishing between mixtures and substances?” and it might generate “A pure substance is made up of only one type of particle, while a mixture is made up of two or more types of particles that are not chemically combined.” This tool eliminates the need for information-searching and saves time.

Or I can prompt it with “Generate a quiz game on this topic.” It might generate a question such as: “What is the key characteristic that distinguishes a pure substance from a mixture? " It produces the multiple-choice answers: A) Homogeneity, B) Heterogeneity, C) Colour” etc. For formative diagnostic assessment purposes, ChatGPT makes it easy for educators to generate interesting activities to engage their students.

In addition, I can use ChatGPT to suggest visual cues for ELL students, in order to help them understand the properties and behaviours of mixtures and substances. For example, I can ask ChatGPT “What visual cues can I use to help ELL students understand the difference between pure substances and mixtures?” and it might answer “Symbols or icons of the methods or techniques used to separate mixtures, such as filtration, distillation, evaporation, chromatography, etc. You can use a tool like Canva or Flaticon to create and customize symbols or icons. You can also use a tool like Edpuzzle to create videos with embedded questions or comments about the separation methods.” This tool can help me provide differentiated and individualized instructions to different groups of students.

Connections to Research
According to some research, ChatGPT can improve education by:
-
Enhancing student engagement and motivation because ChatGPT can provide students with interactive and personalized feedback, guidance, and support (Allam et al., 2023).
-
Assisting teachers’ instruction and innovation because ChatGPT can support teachers in creating lesson plans, activities, assessments, and resources (Prodigy Education, 2023).
However, ChatGPT can also disrupt education by:
-
Encouraging student cheating and dishonesty because ChatGPT can enable students to easily generate texts that can be passed as their own work, without proper citation or acknowledgment (NPR, 2023).
