Full Description

MindMup 2 is an application that allows users to

brainstorm, create presentations and document outlines

with MindMup 2.  It creates, allows collaboration,

and shares mind maps in the cloud.  It is based on an

open-source mind map editor, with a simple and open data

format.

Classroom Implementation & Educational Rationale

In language class, students can use MindMup 2 to create a simple mind map on story plot development or character interactions, print it out, or submit it online to the teacher instead of drawing one on paper.

MindMup 2 can assist me in creating mind maps for lesson plans.  For example, when creating a mind map, I can centralize the primary topic.  To initiate a mind map, I first decide on the primary topic of a lesson or document and place it in a central bubble. Then I can branch from the primary topic to the extended ideas. Each branch represents a main category of an idea related to the fundamental topic.

MindMup 2 provides simple and accessible tools that allow the user to change the font size and bubble colours to assist a reader in understanding an idea. I can use it to make in-depth information. For example, in the map, additional smaller twigs of detailed information in each branch will further define the mind map's depth of content.  Its overall span depends on the amount of data a lesson entails.  Drawing a supporting child branch should not be random. It is advisable to specify criteria as starting points for each section of relevant figures to radiate. From my personal experience with MindMup 2. The mind maps make presenting ideas more fun. Students can freely add colours, images or doodles to elevate the content of mind maps and stimulate learning responses from the cerebral cortex. It is a great tool for brainstorming and organizing their thoughts on a topic or a project.

Connections to Research

MindMup 2 highlights important facts, but also shows the overall structure of a subject and the relative importance of the individual parts of it.  MindMup 2 is helpful when you need to think creatively, and can help you to make new connections between ideas.  This is useful when you have problems to solve (Zen Flowchart, n.d.). Additionally, in one study on mind map efficiency, the researchers examined the effectiveness of using the 'mind map' study technique to improve factual recall from the written information. They discovered that the recall of factual material improved for the mind map group by 10% (Farrand et al., 2002).
